Dear AOT alums and artistic friends,
We wanted to let all of you know about the many upcoming opportunities to perform with AOT. Some are paid roles and positions, others are community engagement events, and some are related to a new artistic crusade we are developing. We hope you will take a moment to consider how you could be involved. For those of you geographically far from Ann Arbor, know that you are always welcome to come visit, and we encourage you to share what we’re doing with others who might be interested.
JUNE 5-11 2017 –beyondARTSfest and SUOR ANGELICA (PAID-SMALL STIPEND)
This is the working name for a new festival being created. ARTS standing for "Artistic Revolutions Transforming Society." Beyond in that we look beyond this moment in both directions - the past and the future. We look beyond ourselves and our ideologies and create a space where we can admit we don't have all the answers and that celebrate the fact that we never will. Such is the amazing world we live in, and now, more than ever before we have deeper opportunities to explore ideas from all over the world. Together we can be stronger, and our organization chooses to look beyond fear and embrace and nurture the beauty of the world around us. And we believe the classical arts are designed and intended to draw us into a deeper relationship with ourselves, each other, and the world we inhabit. Art as opposed to entertainment, meaning as opposed to superficiality. Expression in the face of intimidation. And as a small non-profit arts organization we feel we are best equipped to forge a new conversation about the role of classical arts in this particular time. SO….for one week we will be offering a platform for different arts organizations and individual artists to express who they are, specifically when it comes to the themes of stigma and shame. If you have an idea for a piece or project, we’d love to hear about it. If you want to learn more about what we already have going on and seeing how you might fit into things we already have planned, connect with us.
AOT’s production is to be Puccini’s Suor Angelica, with orchestra, 2 performances, one cast. Auditions have now been schedules for FEBRUARY 18-19 in Ann Arbor (recordings also accepted)
FEBRUARY 25-MARCH 4, 2018 – PUCCINI’S TOSCA (PAID)
That’s right…go big or go home. We are doing 4 performances of this war horse at the POWER CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS. It will be sung in the original Italian and accompanied by full orchestra. The production will be set in 1920’s Russia, with Tosca being an international singing star AND a spy sent to assassinate Scarpia.
We hope to have one cast for this show created with AOT alumni, so if you’ve sung in our productions in the past and think you’re ideal for a role in Tosca,
let us know.
This will be the launch of our “Essential Series,” with an emphasis on introducing college students and elementary aged children to opera.
