American mezzo-soprano Amanda Cantu is an alumna from the University of Michigan. Last spring she received her master’s degree in voice performance and while at the university she had an integral role in the opera productions. She portrayed the roles of “Mum” in Albert Herring and “Filipievna” in Eugene Onegin. She also had the opportunity to work with George Manahan and Jessye Norman in workshop as they were preparing the world premier of ‘Ask your Mama’, a work by Laura Karpman.

A native of Texas, Ms. Cantu hold’s her bachelors in music at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor where she was also a vital part of their opera program. Ms. Cantu also enjoys performing oratorios and recently performed the alto solo in Handel’s Messiah. The alto solo in Bach’s Maginificat, Mozart’s Requiem, and Beethoven’s Mass in C are a few others in her repertoire. Currently, Ms. Cantu is teaching voice privately and at Grosse Pointe North High School.
